Kenji Johjima was a defensive wizard and an offensive force. Johjima shined as the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks' standout catcher from the late 1990s through 2005, earning seven straight Gold Gloves, multiple Best Nine nods, and the 2003 Pacific League MVP with a .330 average and 34 homers. He made history as the first Japanese catcher to start full-time in MLB after signing a major contract with the Seattle Mariners, where he posted a .291 average with 18 homers in 2006 and finished his MLB tenure with 48 homers over four seasons. A bridge between elite Japanese players and Major League talent.
