He is a left-handed pitcher who throws a variety of pitches, including a four-seam fastball, a slider, and a cutter. Akiyama is known for his excellent control and his ability to pitch to contact.
Akiyama had a breakout season in 2015 when he went 12-6 with a 2.99 ERA. He was also selected to the NPB All-Star Game that year. Akiyama has continued to be a solid pitcher for the Tigers, and he is one of the most respected pitchers in NPB.
