Mazda’s story starts in Hiroshima, Japan, where in 1920, Jujiro Matsuda took over a small cork manufacturing company called Toyo Cork Kogyo. Over time, the company transitioned into manufacturing machinery, and in 1931, it produced its first vehicle, the three-wheeled “Mazda-go” truck. Throughout the decades, it expanded into passenger cars, adopting the Mazda name—derived from both Matsuda’s name and the Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda—and established major manufacturing and engine plants in Hiroshima (Ujina), Hofu (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and Miyoshi (for its engine plant). The Hiroshima plant remained Mazda’s only assembly site until Hofu opened in the 1980s. Mazda’s network of facilities and engineering base in Japan enabled it to tightly control innovation, quality, and performance.
Mazda’s influence on Japanese automotive performance is most evident through its bold engineering and motorsport heritage. It gained worldwide fame for introducing the rotary (Wankel) engine into production cars, especially in its “Cosmo” sports cars and the RX series—an achievement few other automakers dared to pursue. In 1991, a Mazda 787B—powered entirely by rotary technology—won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking the only rotary victory at that level and highlighting Mazda’s engineering bravery. Mazda also led the way with “Skyactiv” technologies—covering engines, transmissions, and chassis—that prioritize efficiency while maintaining driving dynamics, reinforcing Japan’s reputation for combining practicality with performance. Its design philosophy, Kodo ('soul of motion'), along with its focus on driving experience—often aiming to create a connection between driver and car—has shaped how performance is viewed both in Japan and globally.

Measurement Notes
Japanese clothing sizes are typically smaller than those in the US, which is an important consideration when shopping for apparel. Additionally, vintage Japanese clothing tends to have even smaller dimensions compared to the sizes available today. To ensure you find the most accurate fit, we recommend referring to the specific measurements provided for each product. This will help you select the size that best suits your body shape and preferences.
It's important to note that all measurements are taken with the item laid flat on a surface, allowing for precise evaluation of the garment's dimensions.
If you have any other questions about the sizing of a specific product, please don't hesitate to contact us.
