Roki Sasaki has created one of the most impressive early-career pitching resumes in modern Japanese baseball while playing for the Chiba Lotte Marines. Drafted first overall in 2019, he was initially developed with care but quickly emerged as the Marines’ ace due to his exceptional velocity, command, and a devastating splitter that strikes out batters at an astonishing rate. His signature moment with the team came on April 10, 2022, when he threw a perfect game, featuring 19 strikeouts and a record-setting stretch of 13 consecutive strikeouts. This performance instantly established him as a national star and one of the most intimidating pitchers in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
On the international stage, Sasaki played a crucial role in Japan’s championship win at the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He provided Japan with a powerful arm capable of changing the game in just a few innings, including a high-pressure start in the knockout round against Mexico. By the end of the tournament, his reputation had only grown, establishing him as a young pitcher with elite talent who can thrive under the brightest spotlight.
The Chiba Lotte Marines are a professional baseball team in Japan's Pacific League based in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, in the Kantō region, and owned by Lotte Holdings Co., Ltd. The Marines were a founding member of the Pacific League in 1950 as the Mainichi Orions when the Japanese Baseball League reorganized into Nippon Professional Baseball.
The Marines have won four Japan Series championships: 1950, 1974, 2005, and 2010. They have also won the Pacific League championship five times: 1950, 1960, 1970, 1974, and 2005.
The Marines are known for their strong pitching staff and have had several successful pitchers over the years, including Masato Yoshii, Satoru Komiyama, Tadahito Iguchi, Masahide Kobayashi, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Ryohei Tanaka, Yasuhiko Yabuta, Shunsuke Watanabe, Yuhei Nakaushiro, Hirokazu Sawamura, Hideki Irabu, and future star Roki Sasaki.
